The affect of the rapil fall in the price of silver. may be illustrated by esveral examples. At the prosent price of thiamatal the thaler, which isgal- ly has a parahssing power of 3 marks gold, and uust be reesivoi at that value, has a mutal value of little over 2 marks, while the ailor Smark piece which as bango is solaed 10 por osat. ander vaine, has only an intrinsic value of marks. In Germany there are in circulation 950,006,000 marks of silver money, containing about 3,000,000 "kilog, ut silver. If this silvor were to be sold now at it actual value there would be a loss of early 900,600.000 merks. Wore the thalers, of which 450,000,000 marks worth are fo niroulotion, to be sold the loss would amount to 180,000,000 macke, provided the silver could be disposed of withonsa farther fall in vains, and this is doubt fal. When one thinks of the vast amount of plate owned by families, do, it is spon what vast lose the depreciation in the valus of alvor represents.
The Lancet says that a boy with cat'a oynu is reported as now exciting the attention of the oculists of Chisato Mrs. Quinn, of $71 Wall Streot, recently visited the State Ego and Da Infirmary in company with her son, who possesses the peonfiar power of seeing in the dark. Ons of the surgeons, Dr. Charles F. Binalair, called in several other oculists to examine the anomaly. The boy was taken into a dark room, and various toate wire applivd. The sgabalja, glistened liko balls of fire. The larger portion of the Iris is missing, only a small portion bring visible on the outer side of each eye. When taken into a dark room nu immediate panion takes place which suckles the bar to pre perfectly, is strong light blinds him, and from this ame peculiarity' the bay is able to see object at a distance with mnot more clearner-than-thors alow at hand. It seatas to be a case of coloboma of the iris and choroid, with defective development of pigment, and parhaps with a hypo-sensitive retina
Varioasingenious inventione have been brought forward at sundry times for sending photographs by telegraph, but so far nothing has some of them. A moro modast scheme reosully derised bears greilut promise of practicability than its forerunasta. The inventor takes an ordinary photograph or skaton sud divides it into a ZET- bar of emall squares by a series of raled veelical and horizontal lines: A dupliante copy is kept at the receiving end of the telegraphic system. A pude is agreed upon by means of which the position of any aquars eam he wired. and also details of its contente-olour, light and shade, curves, &c. It is evident that the squares into which the pictura 13 divided may bu rule of any sira, so that in many cases on mennt of tonil saabling a very respectable drawing to be roads can be telegraphed without trouble. It is plain that the tins which may be required for the process will be the most important factor to a considered in forming judgments to the onpabilities of this new method of pistare telegraphy.
The Gormna paper publish an account, of su
important discovery in glass manufacture made
by Friedrich Siemens, of Dresden, who is said to haro scccceded in casting glass in the same way as metal is cast and obtaining an article corres pending to east metal. Three or four years ago pooxlar kind of glass was cast in the Drosden works of Herr Siemens, which was enid to bo suitable for railway sleepers, sød, which was re- commended as a substitute for iron sleepers on account of its cheapness. Now it is reportedl that the new cast glass is hard. vot dearer in production than cart iron, and has the advantage of transparency, so that all favs can be detent- sd before it is applied to practical nee. It will be much less exposed to injury from atmospherin influences than iron. The process of production is not diffeall, the chief feature being rapid cooling. The hardness and resisting power of this cast glass-are so great that experiments are being just now carried out at the Siemens Glas Fondry at Dresden with the purpose of ascertaining whether the arteriel could be amm- ployed for rails on railways.

The Mussam of the Berlin General Post, Office meaived the other day an interesting ad- dition to its treasures. This is a parchmont iattar found in the city archives of que, and which had been exclosed in a hollow vilkt and tiret out from the holeaguered town of Tensa in 1475. to let the friendly foross of Cologne know of the terrible plight to which the sitizens were redused: Charles the Bold of Burgundy woa carrying on war against the town of Cologne and other Rhonish canfoderated cities, and bei Lemmelin Neuss sa olosaly that the inhabitants were brought to the last extremity. An army of obervation of the confedorates, posted beyond w. 33 the Rhine, watched Charles'a operations, hoping to get an opportunity of relieving the fawn. The letter is from the commander, the Land- grate Bermuzu of Hease, who describes how the besieged are destitute of food and ammunition, and have only stones for weapons and water to live upon. They have no medicines or enrgical appliances, and so the mot and wounded din with. out assistance. Some are for surrendor, and he fears that traitote way betray the place. They had a few days Lufore lost 100 men in ropaking an assault on the Burgandians. The letter mentions that the bowinged had pravicosly fired of several other letters, some of which had fallen into the Rhfas; and they were orponding their Just powder in Bring off this wKRO.
