Superintendent and Inspectors. Having regard to the duties which will devolve on them in their situation, the Council of the Metropolitan Police have proposed to offer to the Superintendent a Salary of £500 per annum, and to each of the Inspectors a Salary of £250 per annum.

Under all the circumstances of the case, Lord Stanley considers these salaries not unreasonable. I am therefore to request you to move the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury to sanction this proposal in order that immediate steps may be taken for making the appointments.

With reference to my letter of the 18th June and to 28th June, Lord Stanley is pleased to acquaint you that the individuals who have been appointed Superintendent and Inspectors of Police at Hong Kong have applied to his Lordship for an advance of half a year's salary to enable them to procure their outfit.
