Prisoner is told, that the charge preferred against him is, that on the morning of the twentieth of October, one thousand eight hundred and forty-three, he, on board the British brig Haslequin then lying at anchor in the Straits of Formosa, feloniously, and maliciously, assaulted and wounded William Hoptris, the said vessel's second mate, who on the 27th of October in the same year, died of the wound so received or violence done.

I am second mate of the British brig Harlequin. I was, previous to the decease of William Stopkris, late of the Harlequin. On Friday (witness states that he is not certain as to the date without reference to the log book) at seven A.M., I was standing on the top gallant forecastle Harlequin - which vessel was then lying at anchor.
