of which of those crimes the Prisoner is guilty - Of his guilt in the greater or lesser degree there is no question. The evidence as to the death of William Hopkins is full and explicit, and as to the cause of his death, it is clear that the Prisoner bears a serious responsibility.
You have to acquit yourselves of this responsibility, and I have only to beg that in doing so you will lean to the side of Mercy and will give the Prisoner the full benefit of any doubts you may have. If you wish to refer further to my notes, or to ask any questions from the Court, they are at your service and I will be prepared to afford you answers (to your questions) to the best of my ability and judgment.
The Jury retired for about half an hour and having returned into Court delivered a verdict of murder against Salvador Lucas, but recommended him to Mercy on account of the provocation he received at the moment of committing the crime.
