He beg to append also a Supplementary Estimate to 82b, already forwarded to Your Lordship for Roads and Drains south of Victoria road, amounting to $1142.
A further sale of land in lots for building purposes, took place on the 24th Instant; adding £89619s7d per annum to the Town Rents, which together with £286, realized by the sale, on the 20th Instant, of a few detached lots, situated within the Chinese part of the town, now amount to £12,917 per annum.
I have the honor to forward herewith schedules of the particulars of both sales.
My personal surveys of the South side of the island, since the cessation of the hot season have convinced me that ample pasture, with inexhaustible pools of fresh water, exists for cattle and sheep, and I have accordingly written to Sir George Bonham, requesting him to offer to persons in Australia, the occupation of portions of this island for pasturage, free of rent, during the pleasure of the Colonial Government, but entitling them to a year's notice previous to removal. This was partly suggested by an offer actually made to me here. The object hoped for is to cheapen the present high price of butcher's meat at HongKong, and ultimately to afford a rent to the Government.
I have the honor to be,
With the highest respect,
Your Lordships' Most Obedient,
Humble Servant.
