Estimates previously sanctioned for Cheki Chu, but now suspended. The position of Shek Pichuen will soon render it an important place, when the proposed road by the west shall have been completed.

The plans and Estimates for this most desirable road, I have now the honour to forward to Your Lordship, as they have "passed in Council. It will open out by the shortest way the south side of the many an island, and give value to sites in pleasant and healthy positions, which are now worthless from want of approach. Indeed, it is much to be wished that a road entirely round the island completed for Military, Police, and all other purposes.

The proposed western road cuts off a portion of the western extremity of the island, and passes over a depression of the ridge of mountains, which at once struck me as the proper point, on first making Hongkong in Her Majesty's Steamer. Spiteful. I have limited its breadth to fifteen feet, as abundantly sufficient, and its total cost, according to the Estimate forwarded, will be about £4,000. I am not aware of any public work which will give more general satisfaction in the Colony than this.

On the 11th Instant, a report and Estimate were passed in Council for the construction of New Streets in Victoria West, and for repairing some streets in the Chinese location of Taipingshan, amounting to Dollars 8952, and it was resolved that the Surveyor General be directed to carry the work into effect as soon as possible, for the purposes of public health and convenience.
