new road

Magistracy premises.

In the early October, the Acting Surveyor General was called before the Council to report upon the survey which he had made of the proposed road to Saiwan and Tytam along the Coast.

If Cleverly represented that no difficulty existed which might not readily be overcome, and that the expense of constructing the proposed road would not exceed $2 per yard. It was resolved, considering the great advantages which the Colony would derive from such a construction, both in Civil and Military point of view, that the Land Office be directed to make a detailed Estimate and report upon the subject; with a view to its being immediately carried into effect. Similar detailed Estimates and reports on the proposed road by Yost Point to Shekpaiwan were also ordered.

I have now the honor to enclose report and Estimate for the road to Saiwan and Tytam, as well as one sanctioned for a smaller work of the kind nearer to "Victoria". These roads are of the utmost consequence as they give value to locations which they could not before possess, and it is most desirable to carry them round the island.

On the 16th October, the Law Officers report and Estimate of the road to Saiwan and Tytam was approved, and the sum of $15,000 voted in Council for its completion. The Acting Surveyor General was at the same time authorized to procure such assistants as might be necessary to enable him to go on with the numerous undertakings at hand.
