Major Caine submitted a list

of thirty three men, whom he reported

to be

fit

to undertake the duty, and the

matter was referred to the determination.

Council came

to

a

decision

that they should be formed into squad for temporary trial on the following scale and rate of pay. 1. Staff: 1 Havildar or Superintendent $16 per month, 2 Havildars or Sergeants.

On the 25th September, the Council

read a letter from Major Caine, herewith enclosed, with the accompanying p.2. report from Capt. Bruce recommending the addition of One naik and two privates to the Hindostanee Police, to make it as efficient as possible for protection of the town, and to enable the Chief Magistrate to extend it from

the

Burial ground to the gap on the East, a point at which robbers are in the habit of entering the town. It was resolved by the Council that the augmentation should be made at the same rate of payment as the rest of the Native force.
