Diseases and Invertality. The prevailing disease of Hong Kong fever combining the sharmaan of "the African and West Index-fever.
It was at first exposed to be epidemic but it has now become endemic, and may be assumed to be the fated Malady of the Island. Diarrhoea and Dysentery form the next most fatal class of diseases. Last year the strength of the European Native troops was 1526 and the number who passed through hospital in the year amounted to 7893, that is, on average every man went through the hospital more than five times with various diseases.
If the diseases afflicted 162 by fever, 162 by diarrhoea, and 180 by other complaints: the total number of deaths out of 1526 men was 441. Fatal fever cases were high. Live 3½.
