present incipient state of the Colony; it being clearly understood that such allowance would be temporary only, and granted surely provisionally until the decision of Her Majesty's Government could be obtained.

in the case of the buildings The completion of the buildings in question will enable me to accommodate, without any expense to Government, certain public servants, each paying an extremely light rent. The premises consist of a range of four distinct houses capable of holding two persons. A rent of four hundred Dollars for each of these from the 1st January next will yield $1,600 on the whole, a fair return on the expenditure of Government at the rate of above 8 per cent to include the charges of necessary repairs. Thus each individual will be well lodged for less than £50 per annum, at the same time that the Government receives an ample return for its outlay. Under these circumstances Your Lordship may perhaps see fit to sanction the continued residence of the parties in these quarters on the existing conditions.

With reference to Your Lordship's Despatch Nr 17 of June just received, I shall not fail hereafter to afford most precise information in my power respecting the accounts and Estimates of public works and buildings forwarded from Mr. Gordon the Land Officer. With the exception of works immediately affecting the public health or convenience, I may state that nothing included in those large Estimates has been commenced upon.
