The plan, which we would propose to be adopted, is as follows, that as suggested in His Excellency's Memorandum, a new location be prepared for the Petitioners where the streets shall be marked out and the ground levelled, and that they be permitted to remove all their Materials from their present position.
Major Faine and Mr. Sardon are of Opinion that Fifty Dollars ($50) be given as compensation, but Mr. Gutzlaff thinks it too much and proposes Twenty Dollars ($20). It is also proposed that all arrears of rent be remitted to them, and that they be allowed to occupy their new locations rent free for five years from 25th December, 1866.
We think that the period for removing their houses cannot be extended beyond July next, as the land on which they stand was sold on the 22nd January last with the condition, that the Purchasers should be put in possession within six months from the day of sale.
The locality to which the Petitioners are to be removed is nearly opposite the Lower Bazaar, on the South-side of the Queen's Road, and there will be sufficient time to have the ground prepared and levelled, so that the removal may be made within the time already specified.
