beg to bring under the notice of His
Excellency an official Despatch, dated Hongkong 29th March, 1842, wherein it is stated in paragraph V that, British Coins are not to be deemed a legal tender.

In conformity with the instructions of His Excellency to me in London, last February I brought under the notice of Sir Charles Trevelyan, Secretary of the Treasury, the omission of British Coin being declared legal tender in Hongkong, and was informed,
that probably the reason
why British coin was
not declared a legal tender, along with Dollars and Rupees, was owing to the fact of its being
legal tender in every part of Her Majesty's
