some precise allocation might be received from the Colony for the expense actually incurred on Civil account of the Government. But as the close of the Session approached we felt that we should not be gratified any longer with holding from Parliament such information as we were able to afford on the subject, or in delaying to obtain a Parliamentary sanction for the Establishment which we had previously authorized. We therefore laid before the House an Estimate based on the Schedule annexed.
By despatch No. 3, 22 Jany/44, 12-14 Feby/44, 16. 7 March (204, 224, Pokinger 30 Decr, Carb do 28) with such slight modifications have since been agreed upon.
We at the same time, as you will perceive, intimated that a Revenue of at least £20,000 might be derived from a calculation founded on the Ming-despatches of the dates mentioned in the marginal note of Book.. Hooda, which had been taken for building and Repairs thereto.
This was of course a conjectural Estimate – and have no means of ascertaining whether it will exceed or fall short of the expenditure.
