We have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 6th Instant, in reply to one we addressed to His Excellency Sir Henry Pottinger on the 4th Instant, and beg to be allowed to offer the following observations in reply.
You remark that we must have seen from various Notifications which have been published regarding Crown Lands that, "Her Majesty's Government did not see fit to recognize Grants or sales of land that had been made by or under any authority whatsoever up to the period of the exchange of the Ratification of the Treaty of Nanking; but it is proper to remark
