I am instructed by Major General D'Aquilar to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 29 Ultimo :
Under ordinary circumstances the bounty of Three Pounds per man, which has been promised to the men to induce them to volunteer their services to the 98th Regiment would doubtless be defrayed from the Military Chest - but the Major General has no authority for such transfer - not only the Major General has no authority, but it is, he believes, directly contrary to orders, and the sole ground upon which he has taken upon himself
