Council on a dissuch agreement that they are to leave Chusan without any claim whatever to compensation on this account, whenever the provisions of the Treaty under which the Island is at present occupied are carried into effect.

Lir Henry Pottinger further communicates the steps which he had taken for procuring the services of competent officers to commence a survey of those parts of Hongkong where it is most urgently required. If we understand the arrangements right, the chief officer of the Survey 1 of the northern side is to have a Salary at the rate of £780 per annum and his Assistant at the rate of $180, with Laborers and an allowance for Contingencies at the rate of £375, making £1335 in all. And application appears to have been made to hold out for another officer and Assistant to be employed on the same footing as above mentioned.

We are not acquainted with the financial arrangements on subjects of this kind at Hongkong. But there can be no doubt of the expediency of urging on the survey

has been rewritten to:

Council on a such agreement that they are to leave Chusan without any claim whatever to compensation on this account, whenever the provisions of the Treaty under which the Island is at present occupied are carried into effect.

Lir Henry Pottinger further communicates the steps which he had taken for procuring the services of competent officers to commence a survey of those parts of Hongkong where it is most urgently required. If we understand the arrangements right, the chief officer of the Survey of the northern side is to have a Salary at the rate of £780 per annum and his Assistant at the rate of £180, with Laborers and an allowance for Contingencies at the rate of £375, making £1335 in all. And application appears to have been made to hold out for another officer and Assistant to be employed on the same footing as above mentioned.

We are not acquainted with the financial arrangements on subjects of this kind at Hongkong. But there can be no doubt of the expediency of urging on the survey
