This is an advantage too perfect to be overlooked in the oppressive atmosphere of these Regions. The levelling of Hills would afford materials for excellent Gardens, and this might increase during the destruction of buildings (where the new work on Canton Road are being destroyed and carried away for private use) and the adjacent Quarries are also stored with supplies, which, doubtless, are large for the construction of Batteries in Penton River.

The expenses of any proposed works would be importantly offset by the cultivated spots, which the inhabitants would cheerfully be paid for. I have noted that during my Survey of Hong Kong (when destined for the day observing and calculating Point) that when calm has prevailed at the old, or western anchorage, moderate breeze prevails in this straits, probably resulting from an induced current caused by the rarefaction of the air (when the sun has shone along the extent of the valley towards Tytane Peak).

This Island is, at present, materially deficient. The land there could be reserved for warehouses alone, with wharf sheds, in the direction of the Meridian, scarcely before noticed. By good luck, after one or two decades, I feel satisfied that under such circumstances not be experienced Least. The reduced hills would offer a simple place for a comfortable private residence.

It would materially tend to the comfort, cleanliness, and salubrity of the town of advantage that attends the present abundant supply of big water. This should be better attained and rendered available.
