Before General D'Aquilare left this Colony for England he proposed to me enquiring (of which I enclose a copy) the intent to erect a monument on this Cemetery, in fulfilment of an engagement with Parliament, to hand over the Portuguese Establishment at Macao to the Chinese Govt., that question to the Earl of Aberdeen, by whose directions it has been referred to this Govt.

I also enclose a copy of a letter from Mr. J. Hope to Sir. St. Pottinger, which has been made the subject of enquiry.

I presume that not only the foregoing, but also the letter from General D'Aquilare to me, will be referred to the Earl of Aberdeen, by whose directions I shall be guided in this matter.

I shall also communicate the substance of this despatch to the Secretary's Letter of the 6th Instant, for your information.
