be effectually restrained from riotous & disorderly Conduct in
the Ports of China prior to British
trade; and that every
exertion
should be made which can
properly be made to promote a Cordial intercourse with the People & Authorities of China, & the maintenance of relations with that Empire on the most amicable footing.
I propose to transmit a copy of this letter to his E. Pottinger " for his information & Guidance. I. his E. have seen with the most entire approval & satisfaction
the zealous & Cordial manner in
the way in which his M. Pottinger & the
Commodore
&
Admiral have Cooperated with
each other for

the best interests
&
the promotion of
M. Majesty's service in that remote Quarter; & they would be continuing
that to trust to the mutual good feeling of those distinguished Officers
In the Continuance of that harmony which has hitherto characterized
their intercourse with each other
But...
an additional, though
doubtless, superfluous, security, & his E. thought it right that their relation to each other in
matters in which they
are
mutually
called upon to take part should be distinctly & authoritatively Explained. to them, & it is for that purpose
that
