My Lord,
In acknowledging the receipt of Your Lordship's letter, No. 247. of yesterday's date, I have the honour,
I have to state that I see no objection whatever to British Merchants building temporary warehouses at such locations, on the large Island, (of Chusan) as Major General Schoedde may think fit to allot for that purpose, but they should not be allowed, on any pretence, to build on any of the adjacent Islands, and they must further be made to distinctly understand that they will be obliged to leave Chusan, without reference to or claim for any outlay they may have incurred there, the very moment General Davis intimates to them that it is the pleasure of Her Majesty's Government.
