This case.

JIV 1)

Mr Dans seems to me to be a most unjustifiable transaction from first to last, on the part of the Gillespie. It is shown that he in the first instance committed a positive act of fraud on her employers [Messrs Wetmore & Co] and now would seem to be not only perpetuating in that act of fraud but to be threatening to bring an action for slander against one of those Gentlemen [Mr. Legge of the Firm of Messrs Wetmore & Co] because he expressed to him the only opinion that any honest man could form of her [Mr. Gillespie's] conduct. I consider that Messrs Wetmore & Co were positively bound to warn all persons to whom they recommended Mr. Gillespie against trusting him further, and I am certain that no jury would award damages on any such pretence.

I now with the Chief Magistrate's information to Gillespie, that I expect that a Court with criminal jurisdiction will be established in this Colony which will decide this case, that in the meantime if he [Mr. Gillespie] attempt to leave Hongkong, he will be detained, and that the Land Officer will be instructed, not to register the sale or transfer of any property he may hold.
