I have the honour
to acknowledge
receipt of your letter of the date
addressed to me
of 4th inst.,
conjointly with the said Rebate and Shuck, on the subject of certain locations transferred from Capt. Meik to Mr. Webster and myself.
In reply I beg to say,
that the whole of transaction was conducted under the direct sanction
of the Govt., formally and officially given in a letter
from A. K. Johnston Esqre., addressed to Mishock of date 26th October ultimus, in virtue of which regular transfer was made at the Land Office, and on the faith of which the purchase money was paid.
Our title to the land, therefore is not
of subject
to any change or non-implement of the terms of the grant, on the part of Govt., which has at this stage been brought forward; but is based on the good faith of the Govt. of the Island, which after one investigation, made over
the property to
us, and which has subsequently, during the progress of our
operations
