Head Quarters Victoria, (Hongkong)

The 7th August, 1943.

It is not my intention to reply to your Excellency's letter of yesterday's date, Nr. 45 but it is not in my nature when a false impression is taken of my motives, to sit down quietly without an attempt at least to remove it.

My letter to which your Excellency's letter was an answer was written in a spirit of friendly explanation, and His Excellency's letter Nr. 45 is the most perfect example of using the expression.

Sir Henry Pottinger, Bart, B.C.B. Governor of HongKong &c. &c.
