HONGKONG-Mr. P. Eduljee, in his Report dated
23rd
ec., states:Unfavourable advices from Shanghai have greatly disc urged the few large. native operat rs who were keeping up the market for the past few weeks, and only a paltry business has been done during the interval, as noted at fot. Prices have declined fully $2 per bale, and holders will be willing to yield to till greater concessi ns if any large quantity could be placed, but for any thing beyond actual requirements dealers will not offer at any price. For the last few days business is at a complete stand-til and the mar ket closes weak and unsteady. Homi Hy continues strong Exchange on India closes to-day at 8. 138 for T/T and R-. 13" for. Post. Sales of the interval gregate 1,215 b les, arrivals am un! to 3,802, unsold stock estimated at 14,000, and sold but unclear d bales in second hunds about

CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT
PIECE
GOODS.
!
Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co,An their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 17th Dec., 1909, state:~ With no demand whatevel for the North and Hankow still ho ding off the demand here is decidedly slack. There is a fair amount of inquiry by dealers who are looking out for bargins, for forward delivery chiefly, but Importers prefer to take the risk of the market themselve, and are only willing to sell for p ompt cash very little of which is forthcoming for fresh trans clions, though we understand that when pr s ed old pur hases re being paid for, th ugh the goods are not cl. red. The full quantities, which continue to be put up at the Thursday Auctions, have somewhat of a depressing affect on the gen- eral market, though prices freye and some of the Whites showed a recovery to-day. Holders, oth native and Foreign, are very firm with merica: goods and decline to sell except at à substantial advance. We underst nd some hayə ben booked by native specalators from first hande, but are unable to get an paticulars. The Subjoined is a brief summary of the Indi n

In July the rising tendency in exc a ge gave place to a weaker tone and simul- taneou- rumours of .. short cotton crop in America enc uraged dealers to reappear in the market in great force. Buying was now esumed w th more or les vig ur throughout July and the greater part of August, when exchange showed signs of an advance and a temporary depression was caused in the market, lasting throughout Septem- ber. On the whole, however, the third quarter came to a close with a satisfactory experience, the gain in values amounting in some instances to $5 per bale, over 40,000 bales changing hands, while prospects ahead appeared encouraging. October set in with a strong genera enquiry consequent on the violent fluctuations in the American cot- ton, and about 22,000 bales changed hands, prices). showing a further advance of $1 to $3 per bala. Business du ing the last two months has dwindled into a minimum, wing to almost pro ibitory prices now ruling, and the year closes almost lifeles with a meagre stock of 14,000 bales to be carried forward In the begi ni gf the year best No. 10, were sold at $109 and Nỗ. 20. at $.30. They are now quoted at 126 and 145, respectiv-ly, exchange on Indi fu tunting be- tween Rs. 128 and Rs. 133 throughout the greater part of the year. Although sales during the year show no improvement over hose of the previous twelve months, the trade as a whole, so far as Hongkong i concerned, has been remunerative. With cheap cotton, ste dier silver, and incessant rise of prices throughout the greater part of the year, more than cove ing prices have been ob- | ON tained, and if invoice costs are any guide to resul s the profits are more or le considerable and commensura e with the extent and volun e of the transactions. Our native dealers have not fared badly. Prices have been steadily rising throughout the greater part of the year and the coun ry demand has been responsive. On June 30th, 1908, there were in all India 241 mills working and in course of construction, f which Bombay Island alone claimed 86, runni g 2,736.483 spindles and 35,97 looms, and employing 101,536 hands daily.
