HONGKONG SHARE QUOTATIONS
HONGKONG, 19th November, 1909.-We have no improvement to report in the market, basi- ness remaining restricted and rates still inclining to weakness. With the exception of a further rise in Sugars there are no especial features in the market to report. Exchange on London closes at 1/8 11/16, and on Shang- hai 75 T{1'.
con-
FIRE I SUBANCES. Chioss have been done at 114, and more shares could be placed at that rate. Hongkongs continue with a few shares on offer at 375, but without sales.
SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have been laced during the week at 30, bu at time of closing shares are in request at 304. Other sto ks under this beading show.no changes and call for no remarks.
It has naturally caused a much bette feeling throughout the market, and should soon have the desired effect. That is, of course, if consumers can pay the enhanced prices now wanted by private sellers to enable them to replace what they dispose of. The prices now being obtained for Yarns certainly shows, there is plenty of room for an advance in Cloths, and some speculators amongst the native dealers appear to be of the same pinion and are picking up anything cheap that is procurable. The slump that took place in American Cotton immediately after our last report was issued, causi g the Liverpool quotation to drop about a halfpenny, did not seem to have much effect here, as rices for goods on this mar- ket have for a long time part borne no-relative value with the raw staple, A reaction has already taken place to the extent of more than the equivalent of half the drop, and has the effect BANKS. Hongkong and Shanghais only of making the dealers more chary of but-inue to rule steady bu very quiet and we have ting any faith in the enhanced prices, which they only small sls at 992 to report Buyers at consider is purely the result of speculation that rate, however, rule the market at time of Thus holders have had no re-ponse to the cosing, and shares appear to be scarce and higher prices they have deemed it necessary, and unobtainable under 995, at which last rate a few demand, and which Auction rates are a long way shares are on offer. off yet. So far from the temporary decline in Cot-have improved in the North to 107 with buyers. Cantons have found further buyers at 1624, ton having any weakening eff ct on the market in Manchester quotations from thence are stronger, We have nothing further to report under this
After declining to inside 7.50d. in, beading. Live pool the price of Mid-American Cotton re- covered a few points at a time until it reached 7.54d. yesterday. In consequence, however, of a sudden rise of 54 points in New York the price in Liverpool has jumped to 7.77d. spot. For Egyp- tian the quotation is rather weaker than last week, namely, 11d. The quotations received from Nw York to-day are 14.67 cents for spot and 14 95 cents for March. It is conjectured that this advance is due to the operations of speculators again. There has be n a large increase in the demand for Indian Yarns, the Tientsin buyers sh wing considerable eagerness to secure their favorite spinnings. Prices have ruled very strong at an average advance of fully a tael per bale.
Japanes and Local Yarns are also in good request; it is being re: orted that fully 25,000 bales of the former have been bought t arrive between this and next March, Some of the 1 cal Spinners are declining to meet the demand at present prices, but others have book- ed fair contracts. The weakness reported in the otton market yesterday has quite dis- appeared, it opening this morning at fully, last week's prices. The very reprehensible practice of watering Cotton is being practiced more than ever by the natives; in site of the proclamations of the Chinese authorities here, the far eis e aim-. 5.35 ing that they can do what they like with this property. On the score of danger, owing to the very g eat possibility of spontaneous combus'ion, the authorities should pr hibit its being brought any where near the set lement if it is in that state. It is of course a very difficult matter to deal with so long as exporters and mill-owners here show such anxiety to acquire it. There is a speculative inqui y at somewhat better prices, but so far no- where near the ideas of holders, and it seems ext emely unlikely they will show any weakness now the Auctions are being curtailed. We have not heard of any transactions from first hands, and second-hand holders are now asking enhanced prices, while there are plenty of buyers if anything is offered at cheap rates. Very little has been done in American makes, but a slight advance is noticeable for one or two of the small parcels settled. The Auctions for Grey and White goods have gone off with scarcely a single insta: ce f a decline in prices. It cannot be said that the advance is very regular. Turkey Reds went firmer prices, and with few exceptions Fast Black Italians also. Woollens on the whole have kept fairly steady.
