THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND
Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece G`ods Report, dated Shanghai, 29th Oct., 1909, state:-- The Northern ma kets are showing rather more activity, a fair quantity of American makes, especially, having been settled at sadly inadequate prices, though some slight improvement is being hown in the lighter weights. The assas ination if Prince Ito has caused some anxiety amongst these interested in the Korean trade what will happen, and it is thought that any demand from that country will be held in abeyance for the time being awaiting further developments. The River trade is fairly uotive, and is marked chiefly by the better enquiry fr light weight American goods. Manchester is very firm at the high prices recently established, and, so far from any counter offers being enter- tained, unless accepted at once, a further advance
in demanded. Cotton in Liverpool is gradually but steadily rising, to-day's quotations coming 7.58d. for Mid American spot and 7.34d. for January/February. An advance is also advised. in Egyptian to 1d. the market closing steady: The New York quotations are 14.41 cents. for December and 14.48/14.55 cents January/March option. The goods market is going still higher, the latest quotation received for Pepperell Drills being 138. 44d., the equivalent at the present exchange of about Tls. 6.10, and they are selling here at Tls. 5.30 net. The Indian Yrn market is at a standstill owing to the higher prices now asked by holders on account of the fall in exchange. The recent prices current for some of the favourite spinuings were not paid for actual consumptive requirements, but merely to bolster up the market for the purposes of the middlemen, who are really ready and willing to sell a good deal inside those rates, and there is no reason to doubt that they have turned over a considerable quantity on those terms. This attitude of holders, although no doubt induced by the righ prices current in Bombay, likely to deflect the demand to other spinnings. Thus both Japanese and Local yarns are already receiving nore attention. Native Coton has recovered slightly under the steady demand both for Japan and the Local Mills. With the exception of a fair parcel of 72-reed White Shirtings from stock early in the interval, before Exchange dropped so much, there has been very little doing in Manchester makes privately, but clearances continue on a fairly liberal scale. In American makes the sale is reported of 45,000 pieces Pacolet Drills at Tls. 5.10 net and 15,000 pieces Peperell at Tls. 5.30 net, 28. 4d. Exchange guaranteed. We under- stand some lighter makes have been done, but we cannot glean particulars. In Sheetings the only business reported consists of resales on the basis of Indian Head at Tls. 5.15, Whitney at Tls. 5.10 and Owl at Tls. 4.95/5.00. In Shirtings we hear of a sale from first hands f 450 yard Chinese Archer at Tls. 3.45. There is a better enquiry for these light weight, which the dealers are beginning to realise are only in moderate stock. Tls. 3.70 is offered for 4 yard goods, bût holders are asking Tis. 3.75, and Tls. 3.45 for 4.70 yard narrow fold. The Auctions on the whole do not reflect any great strength in the Market, though some makes are distinctly firmer, notably 12-1bs.. 36 inch, other weights of Greys being decidedly irregular. White Shirtings have shown rather better prices for the older chops, but Irishes we weaker. Turkey Reds are disappointing con- sidering the sma 1 stock. Fast Black Cotton Italians lave, on the average improved since last week, though it must be e, nfessed prices are 8mewhat irregular Venetians, have a dowo- ward tendency. With the exception of Spanish Stripes Woollens have all sold at easier prices
