HONGKONG, 29th October, 1909.-The mar- ket continues dull and we bave but little 2.00 business to report. Rabbas also remain quiet and more or less negl-oted. Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 22nd Oct., 1909, state:-- There is perhaps rather more enquiry in the market for goods generally, but the prices sug- gested by buyers are for the most part so inade- quate that very little business has resulted. The fall in Exchange has not helped the situation any more than the advance in Cotton, though both factors are pulling in the same direction this time, that is, in widening the breach between the ideas of buyers and sellers. The dealers have the control over so large a proportion of the stock, that it is impossible to in any way regulate sales against their manipulations. It will doubtless come as a surprise to some to know that business for the Spring has commenced in staple makes of Manchester Grey goods. The exact nature of the transactions have not transpired, but they consist of good- that were bought some time back for late shipment. From native sources we learn they are 12-lbs 36 inch goods, the prices being Tls. 5.20 and Tls. 5.25. The tendency amongst holders, however, is to hang on to what they have, consider- ing the high replacing cost and the impractic- .ability of getting anything near that offered now,
There is therefore very little doing from first, hands, but the dealers are still reselling with some freedom, especially American makes, which are being bought for Tientsin and Newchwang at rather better prices, Ao inquiry for these goods has also been met with from Vladivo tock, though that still remains a closed port. Whether or not they are intended eventually for Manchuria is a moot point, it is, however, reported on good authority that the boycott against Japanese goods is increasing instead of decreasing in that Prov- ince, and great discontent is becoming manifest at the very inadequate service which is being main- tained on the Sou h Manchurian Railway, or at all events that which is available by the outside public. The River trade keeps fairly brisk, sup- plies being drawn chiefly from the Auctions. Tie Manchester market remains in the same posi- tion as regards this so far as staple makes are concerned, though it has been pos ible to book a few Fancy makes at more reasonable prices. The Liverpool Cotton market has kept very strong, Mid American being 7.47d, for spot and 7.19d. January/February option. Egyptian has advan- ced to 10 d. The Export for the first fortnight this month of Plain Cottons to Hongkong a d China was nine million yards only. It is now re- ported that a considerable portion of the export during the past few months has con-isted of con- signments made by Manufacturers who could not obtain the prices they wanted at home. scarcely credit this, however, knowing this market as they must. Cotton in New York I as advanced more than in Liverpool, the latest quotations being 13.80 cents for December, 13.76 cents for January and 13.88 cents for March. Very high quotations are still prevailing, for Domestics.. Duck's Head Sheetings, for instance, 13/-, the equivalent of Tls. 5.80. The Yarn market has gathered strength by the decline in Silver rates. and buyers have shown more willingness to meet the views of holders. The chief demand is for Szechuen, though there are signs of an impending demand for the Northern markets. Clearances have kept up remarkably well. Cotton is weaker, the stock on hand being freely offered in view of the lower prices likely to prevail for the new crop., The sales from stock made privately do not cut a very large figure in the market. They are mostly of a retail character, the demand being purely from hand to mouth. There was one ex- ceptior, however, namely, a line of 200 bales English Grey Jeans, but the price is not published. The enquiry for these goods is brightening up again. In American makes the only private sale that has reached us is a small lot of 3 yard Drills under a private chop, Running Stag chop, at Tls. 4.80., The purchases for Vladivostock were 800 bales Indian Head Sheetings at Tls. 5,12), 200 bales Pacolet Drills at Tls. 5.10, and 100 bales Pepperell Drills Tls. 5.30, though we have since heard Tls. 5,32) has been done.” A re-sale of 1,000 pieces Whitney Sheetings were bought for Corea åt Tls. 5.00. For the North business has been *done with second hands amounting to about 1,500 bales Drills and Sheetings for Newchwang and some 2,000 bales for Tientsin, all at slightly higher prices. Perhaps the best indication of the Per P. & O. steamer Ceylon, sailed on the 22nd market is to be found in the Auction prices, October, 1909:-Glasgow-100 casks ginger. For which mostly show a decided higher range in New York-268 bales pierced cocoons. For Grey Goods, though in Whites previous rates. Marseilles. 3 bales human hair. For London.- were not maintained in many cases.
