Workers in cigar factories at Manila struck for higher wages, having been persuaded to turn out by their Union. The employers, however, stood firm, and decided to close down their factories rather than allow the Union to interfere in the management of their affairs. The strike is now settled.

The death is announced at Singapore of Mr. Raphael Sassoon.
