THE HONGKONG WEEKLY: PRESS AND

although Cotton is.so.much easier, the latest quotations current being 11.84 cents for August, The market for Indian Yarn is at a standstill ow- ing to the great difference between the views of buyers and sellers, the former considering the limit has been more than reached. Japanese Spinnings are saleable, however, to a modernte extent at current rates. It is said a transaction involving the sale of 1,000 b-fes of one of the Local Mills production has been booked on rigate terms. The Native Cotton crop is not shapping very well, in consequence of which holders are raising their prices. Business, from first hands cannot have heen very extensive, but abs hitely 530 nothing is reported, the poor prices received if anything is done no oubt detering sellers froni. making the quotation public, as the eale may probably be made for the purpose of introducing a new chop. Interest has been chiefly centred on the Auctions which have presented a strange contrast in twenty-four hours. Up to yesterday prices were ke ping quite steady to firm as com. pared with last week, but at this morning's Auction a general slump sceins' to have get in, there being se reely one redeeming feature about the sale. With the exception perhaps of Lastings, Woollen goods were equally as disappointing as Cotton fabrics. Stocks-Since writing the above, we have made some personal enquiries and hare discovered ommissions in the Returns to the fol- fowing extent, and we therefore correct our figures accordingly, as they are perfectly genuine and reliab e, the ecretary of the Chamber of Cow- merce confirming the fact that they had not been included in the Returns published, Grey Shirt- i g: 8.4 lbs. 5,000 prices, 10 lbs, 10,000 12 lbs. 12.000; White Shirt ngs 5,000 Turkey Reds 32,600 prices, Fast Black Italians 9,00 + přices.

HONGKONG SHARE QUOTATIONS.

HONGKONG, 30th July, 1909.—The market continues dull, but a fair business has been transacted in a few of the local stock", and also- in Rubber shares. Rates generally are in- clined to weakness and most of our local stooks are neglected. Exchange on London T/t closes at 1/8/13/16. and on Shanghai 741.

BANKS. Hongkong and Shanghais hava continued to rule strong, and in the absence of sellers the rate has further improved, after sales at 1,005, and 1.010 to 1,012, at which last rate the market closes firm.

HANKOW, 22nd July – Business reported since quotation last to hand is £93. the 14th inst., is as under :--

Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co, in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai 23rd July, 1989), state:- The market has ruled exceedingly quiet through- out the interval, and is likely to continue so, if it is correct that only ab ut ore third of the pur- chases made during the last few weeks have been shipped as yet to the consuming districts. It is true there is a good deal of enquiry, but would-bes buyers do not appreciste the very wide margin there is between their offers and the cost of re- placing. this is not altogether surprising when it is considered that there is a difference of fully 5% between what some holders are as ng and Such others are willing to sell similar goods at. incongruities in the market are most disconcert | ing, and quite up set the standing of the oldest chop. At the same time we have never found it | Ningehows so difficult to di cover what is actually going on, Importers being very jealous f other finding out what they are doing. Some light has been thrown on the excessive exports of Plaiu Cottons from Manchester by the receipt of Messrs George Robinson Co.'s statistics for June, which show that it is la gely caused by the great increase in the Exports to Hongkong, which show an ex- cess of 90% for the twe ve months ending 30th June 1909, against an incease of 22%, on similar sh pinents to Shanghai. Aud both in Dyed and Printed goods the shipments to the Colony aro much more commensurate with those of recent years than the Shanghai Figures are. future is likely to show con: iderable curtailment in supplies is pretty well assured, Recent advices received state that many Mills have already com- menced wo king short time and others are serion-- ly contemplating following the s me course, or closing altogether for the time being.

The news from the Out-ports is not encouraging. The water at Hankow is re- ported to be a foot over the Bund, and Shashi is actually under water. In this neighbourhood there is a spell of terribly hot weather which must to a great extent interfer with business. The dealers are still waiting to hear from Tientsin and and Newchwang befne investing any more in American goods, which are nomin ly very strong at the prices quoted last week, or even higher, but transactions have been on & retail scale. The Manchester market is so much ho ve this for staple goods it is impossible to connect, but a quiet business is passing in miscellaneous lines of Fancy m kes, which seem to be available here and there at quite workable prices.
