tection to this City, as a general protection future great Emporium of commerce and wealth, and which I hope and think there is every reason to believe it will become at no distant period, under proper management.
Major Aldrick justly observes, that the occupation of this Island has already become greatly extended, and it is likely to continue to extend to which it may be added that this extension is in a great degree the unavoidable consequence of the nature of the ground on which the City has been founded lying along the shore of the Bay, where the level ground had not originally sufficient depth between the shore and the base of the higher hills to admit of the Streets being laid out and erected in a regular compact form, even had a plan been defined and adopted, when the Island was first occupied.
There is no doubt however, but the want of some such plan, as I refer to has added considerably to the present irregular style of Buildings; but I hope the mischief will be in a great measure rectified by the Survey progress, and other contemplated improvements.
