THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

Japanese Spinnings have likewise been excited owing to the manipulations of the Osaki Ex- change. Prices advanced tremendously, some say to Yen 130.00, but have subsided. Local Spinnings are firm in sympathy with imported Yarns, and this helps to keep the prices for Native Cotton very strong, the demand being in excess of the supply. The business passing privately in piece gods remains very small, but a few Importers do say they have made some progress in getting old pur- chase cleared away inder threats of putting them up for Auction, which continues to be the medium the bulk of the trade is being done by, Both Greys and Whites showed consider ble firmness on the whole at the 1st Yuen Fong sale but these gods had a dropping te: dency this morning. Turkey Reds have appreciated in value throughout the interval with fw excep- tions Fast Back Cotton Italians and Venetians. in spite of a fair sprinking of slightly better rices are undoubtedly weaker on the whole. Woollens have kept fairly steady to firm. The chief business privately has been in American Goods. It was reported that fully 5,030 bales had been taken from Importers from stock, but we are creditably informed that the goods in ques- tions were originally bught at the commen- cement of this year and have now been res Id to the Northern buyers The fresn business in New York consists chiefly of Sheetings and it is said amounts to fully 20,000 bales amongst which we hear is included Buff lo A. and Ficdments 4 Apple Chop. Pelzer A, Clifton C, C, and Piedmont K., on the basis of 1 s. 2d. to 10% 31d. for 3 yard, and 9s. 6d. for 31 yard the shipment being from May to August. Re-esports to Kia- kiang. It is regretable to see the lack of improve- ment shown in this quarter.

Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai 18th March, 1909, state:- The week under review has been a very quiet one, which must to a great extent be attributed to the unfavourable weather conditions prevailing almost uninterruptedly, and also pending the opening of Newchwang, which is not expected now until near- ly the end of the month, the cold up there being so intense the ice is fu ly nine inches thick near the mouth of the River and is not expected to break up before the next spring, say the 22nd inst., | the drift ice making it dangerous to navigation until four or five days latter. It is therefore un- likely that steaners will lear from this until at least another week, though it is understood several are standing by in order to avail of first opportu- nity of slipping out. That it may be carlier is the general hope, every one wishing to see a more decided movement than bas so far been the case in spite of the sanguine expectations entertained earlier in the season. Better news of the market is coming in all the time, and it will be a grat disappointment if it does not soon show some more substantial signs of confirmation. The experts of produce during the last quarter were much in excess of the previous year and should assist the purchasing power of the populace. That there is still great comp-tition for the Manchurian | Sandalwood trade is undoubted. That better news is eig | Saltpetre received from Tientsin is unquestionable, and if the extravagant prices nw prevailing for yarn can be paid for that market why not for other staple makes of goods? Fresh orders have come down during the interval, especially for American goods and a fair quantity have changed hands amongst the Natives, being chiefly resales of goods bought from first hands earlier in the year. These in turn were replaced by fresh purchases in New York where it is'said full, 20,000 Bales have been booked for this market, but not for very HANKOW, 10th March-The prices quoted are early shipment, the Mills not being able to supply for the net shipping weight excluding cost of anything before May and the business done ex-packing for export- tends from that month up to August, and consists chiefly of the medium weights of Sheetings. For the standard makes, especially the Peppereil goods, the very full prices wanted is prohibiting business, the demand for China which they are anticipat- ing, showing no tangible evidence so far of its early advent, in fact there are sellers of goods here willing to take two to three mace under the equivalent of prices they are standing out for. The Manchester market is about unchanged, if anything on the easy side, but so far as we can learn little is being booked for this. Cotton continues to sag down in the Liverpool market, tr day's quotations coming 5.01d. for Mid-American spot", 4.96d. June/July option and 71d. for Egyptian. New York advises a large busine-s doing for China, but Mills are so fully engaged, none of the f esh transactions are for delivery before May, and are mostly for June/August shipment. Cotton has taken a sudden slum in New York, for whereas the quotations came yes- terday 9.48 cen's March and 9.36 cents July, to- day the price for the latter month comes 9,21 cents. The Indian Yarn market here has been cornered by some power.ul operators who are exact ng fancy prices for favorite Spinning, but the general opinion is that they have above touched the tɔp now. It is reported Bombay has commenced to sell for August/September.
