The fixity of the dollar was, the other day, brought ander the notice of the Governor- General of Indo-China by the Chamber of Commerce at Hanoi in Tonkin. The currency of the colony is based on the fickle dollar. The Governor-General agreed with the views of the Chamber, which looked to a fixed dollar, but pointed out that fixity would be dangerous to the Colony so long as China held to a silver basis. The Governor-General gave the usual official assurance that the question would meet with careful consideration on his part, and that he would profit by the experience gained in Siam and Japan in the matter of currency reform.

Particulars of the death by drowning of Mr. Barlow, of the firm of Messrs. Tait & Co.. of Taipeh, recently announced in our columns, are now to hand. It appeared from the evidence given at the inquest that Mr. Barlow and Mr. F. C. Hogg went out in a boat on the river to have a swim. Mr. Hogg had got into the water and was swimming when Mr. Barlow dived off the boat and unfortunately got into difficulties in deep water. Mr. Hogg went the shore. Subsequently, however, Mr. Barlow to the rescue and managed to get his friend to was carried away by the current. Mr. Hogg again went to his assistance and made a plucky attempt to get him to land. The drowning man clutched him, however, and, after a desperate effort to gain a place of safety, Mr. Hogg, find- ing that they were both drowning, was obliged to free himself and make for the shore, which he eventually reached with much difficulty in a completely exhausted condition. At the inquest held by the Japanese authorities the cause, of Mr. Barlow's death was given as heart failure. The tragic occurrence caused the deepest regreti- among the foreign residents at Taipeh and much sympathy is felt with Mr. Hogg at the failure of his gallant efforts to save his friend,
