Your Lordship

will observe, that there are three houses belonging to private individuals within the described limits.

One occupied at present by your Lordship. One by Major Grant, the Deputy Adjutant General, and the third has, I believe, been hired for the Survey Department.

I shall get rid of the difficulty occasioned by these houses to the proposed arrangement, by calling the owners of them to sell them to Government, and giving them locations in other places instead.

Should they decline to dispose of the houses (but I do not consider it at all likely) they will be obliged to remove them.

I have pointed out to Mr Gordon that this Cantonment is far back as the very base of the Mountains, and that it will have great roads leading into it from the "Queen's Road"; One on the extreme left looking towards the Harbour, one on the extreme right, a third through the "Canton Bazaar", and the fourth through Morgan's Bazaar.

I am aware that it was a part of the Executive Engineer's plan to have Officers' Quarters directly in the rear of the Barracks being built; but this plan would encroach on "Government Hill" which I wish to reserve for various Public Buildings.
