Here the Admiral checked himself.
"You had a good time in Japan ?.” "The best.”
“And you are pleased with your welcome here?"
"It is perfect. It is magnificent. It is bey. nd words. Yes, you can say that the warmth of the welcome could not have been exceeded.”

Admiral Emery extended to his interviewer an invitation “to have a look round the ship' and, with a hearty handshake, returned to his chair and his papers.
ADMIRAL SAK,
The dark-complexioned, slimly built, but smartly-uniformed. Admiral Sab readily detached himself from the circle of which be was the centre at the Club when he was informed that our representative wished to have a word with him. Speaking perfect English, he uttered he usual greetings, and in reply to a question, he said that China was delighted at the honour shown her by the visit of the American fleet. We are very glad to have them here," he continued, "It helps our people to understand. It was thought that if China had a large Army that would be sufficient, but now they will realise that China needs a Navy as well." Then he turned to talk of other topics and concluded by inviting our repesentative to visit his flagship.

The present visit of Ame ican ships, the Shanghai Times remarks, recalls the first visit of an American ship to the shores of China. Strange to say, the name of that ship was "The Empress of China," and it entered the port of 'Canton on the 30th of August, 1794. The supercargo of this ship was Samuel Shaw, who in his published Journal spoke of the respect with Mr Buxey's York Rose late Rurio which the American flag has been treated in that distant region, and the attention of the Chinese directed toward a people of whom they have hitherto had but very confused ide as. They styled us the new people; and when by map we conveyed to them "an idea of the extent of our country, with its present and increasing population, they were highly plassed at the prospect of so considerable a market for the productions of their To Every lover of his country, as well as to those who are immediately concerned in commerce, it must be a pleasing reflection that a communication is thus partly opened between us and the eastern extreme of the globe."
Mr. George Wolf, of the well known Manila firm of Messrs. Castle Brothers, Wolf and Son, while out mipe-shooting last week was gored by a carabao. Seeing the danger he was in Mr. Wolf boldly seized the brute by the horns and hung on in the hope that a shot from one of his companions, would dispatch the animal. Mr. Chandler osme forward to execute the carabao but his gun was not powerful enough to carry out his purpose. The wounds inflicted, however, caused him to draw off and Mr. Wolf, bleeding profusely from a severe wound in his right leg, was raised from the, ground and taken at once to Los Banos where he was attended to by Dr. MoVean. As soon as transportation could be secured he was brought to Manila and removed to the St. Paul's hospital under the care of Dr. Mo Dill. We regret to announce that Mr. Wolf has since)succumbed to his injuries.
