security certain lands. Plaintiffs paid $150,000 in respect of the debts of Li Tsung Pak, and by consent the mortgagees transferred to the plaintiffs all their rights under the indentures. The sum of $150,000, had not been repaid but there had been paid 84,312.50 as interest thereon. In October, 1906, they gold the property for $180 000 but had to pay the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank $60,662.82 for principal and interest and $10,000 for cost on their mortgage.

Li Po Kam denied that the transfer to the plaintiffs was made with his consent. November, 1905, he commenced

In 80 aotion against the plaintiffs which was withdrawn upon their agreeing not to hold him liable in respect of the mortgage.

Li Po Yang declare i that the mortgage and the transfer were in no case valid for more than the sums already paid. He averred that the sale was not a real one but a pretended trans- action at a gross undervalue, whereby the plain. tiffs had acquired the property at a price less than two-thirds of the real value. He counter claimed that the sale be set aside and that the plaintiffs pay him $190,000 reosived under the mortgage.

Plaintiffs in reply maintained that the sale was a good one.

Mr. MoNeill opened the case for the plain. tiffs at considerable length and was followed by Mr. Pollook.

The hearing is expected to last about ten day.

YARN.

HONGKONG-Mr. P. Eduljee, in his Report dated 7th August, states:-A further improvement of $1 to $2 per bale has been established in our market for Indian Yarn, and some holders, are spinnings remaining in stock. Late receipts were still asking in advance for the few bales of best sold readily as noted below, and further enquiries 28 to goods on the water are being made. Bombay, although quiet, continues strong, and the recent strike of the mill operatives there will further tend to restrict supplies and greatly strengthen the hands of holders here. A modarata demand has been experienced throughout the greater part of past fortnight and fairly large settlements are reported. Sport stocks of desir- able spinnings are practically all sold, and the attention of dealers has been turned to neighbouṛ- ing markets as well as Bombay for further supplies and some large contracts have been entered into. At the close dealers are holding off, but importers having in view the paucity of stocks and the unsettled condition of the mill industry in Rom- bay, have assumed a bolder front and no decline in prices is apprehended in the near future. Good rain has fallen in almost all parts of India and agricultural operations are everywhere in progress. Sales of the interval aggregate 7,382 bales, unsold stock estimated at 12,000 and un- cleared bales in second hands about 80,000 bálon. Local Manufacture :—A sale of 250 bales No. 10s at $98 has been reported. Japanese Farn:- Continue neglected Raw Cotton :--The märket is bare of stock both Indian and China staple. The Superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department, in his annual report for the year 1907, makes the following reference to the Botanic Gardens:-"The year has been marked by several noteworthy additions to the horticulture of the Colony. The search for a variety of Wallflower suitable for our climate Siam, Field mill cleaned, No. 2... 4.70 to 4.75

has, at last, been rewarded, and a successful batoh of this favourite annual was obtained for the first time. It will doubtless become one of the stook plants of Hongkong Gardens. In this land of flowering shrubs it is not often that we find anything from outside that is worth introducing into our gardens; an exception has occurred recently, however, when shrubs of Dombeya Burgessis, seed of which had been received from Darbin, flowered for the first time and proved a valuable addition to our winter dowering shrubs. Among other plants with fine flowers addel to our herbaceous list during the year may be mentioned Gladiolus Gan davensis and the Gladions-like Watsonia Ardernei. There was a magnificent show of Lycoris Aures in the Old Garden in October from bulbs planted in the grass in 1901.
