PIECE GOODS,

Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co.'s Report on the Shanghai Piver tionds Trade, dated Shanghai,

21st November, 1907, states: -The market is at

an absolute studstill,źno one is doing anything and clearances of odd purcha es are falling of Such a sorry state of affairs as now exists in the trade has never before been experienced in the memory of any one here, and it would seem we are only ginning to realise the rott napas of things. Disappearances amongst the smaller fty of dealers are becoming daily occurrences, and the liabilities of recent openly avowed failures become more and more enhanced. The indebtedness of the Canton merchant commented with Nowel- wang whose failure we mentioned last week is now estimated as over six and a half lakhs ant Taels, the greater part talling on the dealers in Newchwang itself, putting that market in a chaotic state, completely stopping business in the ordinary channels, Stocks, it is said, are small and further means will probably be found for sending up additional supplies without the aid of the Native Banks, who are de liuing th finance any busmess with that Port, so that Shanghai's last hopes as regards that quarter have been dashed to the ground. It is said that Tientsin is very short of stock a Native han is, but that the merchants there are waiting until Newchwang is closed before buying, hoping to obtain better terms then. This may be so, but no movement has taken place here, though per- [ chance the recent enquiry for Indian Cotton Yaro may be some indication of it. The Manchester market is easier, but prices are still considerably over anything this market can touch, in Liverpool has ruled a little easier, declining to 5.82d. for spot on the 19th instant, when fut- ures were quoted 560d. November and 3.541. March, but yesterday's quotation for spot is five points up, namely 5.87d for ad-American and 10d. for Egyptian. The New York price for the former for January is 10 cents, March option falling as low as 9.90 cents, but has recovered to 10.23 cents, according to latest advices. There has been a more active demand for Indian Yarn both for the Tientsin and Szechuen markets, but buyers have succeeded in keeping prices down. Considerably more than is reported is said to have been done, holders here for the most part being anxious to realise, in spite of the news of a rise of three to four Kupees in the Bombay

From Messrs. Iliert & Co's Weekly Market Report, dated Shangbai, November zi, 1907 :--- Business has been of a very fat character during the week, clearances having been interfered with hy rain, while owing to the failures reported last week, the Newchwang market closes for the winter without either desire or capacity for purchasing any supplies, and Tientsin also appears to have all it can hold. From Chefoo, also, a failure of a native merchant, with liabilities of Tls. 70,000, is reported, which has temporarily dulled inquiry from that outlet. Trade, however, with the Yangtze is of a healthy character, and indications are not wanting of a better trade than would appear

from business coming to actual importers, in the steady quantity of supplies that are going up river, and dealers are sanguine of an improving demand as the winter approaches, which at present is being heralded by the usual tentative offers at impossible prices from the smaller dealers. Grey Shirtings.--Ohly a few unimportant sales have been brought to book during the interval though inquiry has improved somewhat. T. cloths.-Little or nothing has been done outside the auctions where very little change took place. Jeans.-These goods are firmer on the whole and a very fair volume of business has been done. White Shirtings.-- A steady tone rules in the market though demand is still rather slack. Drills.—Qur market is quiet with a drooping tendency, a very restricted
