THE FOURTH GYMKHANA-

88

The fourth meeting of the Hongkong Gymkhans Club took place at Happy Valley on August 31st when the attendance was large if not larger than at the previous meeting, which it will be remembered was a record one. The committee of the Club could not have d-sired a better day for the meet. Clouds obscured the fervid rays of the sun, while a gentle breeze cooled the atmosphere. The course was fast, ad so were many of the ponies, the times registered comparing favourably with those of previous meetings. As usual, the band of the Middlesex Regiment was on the ground, and played selections of music in the intervals between the races. Before the second race star ed, the playing of a stanza of the National Anthem heralded the arrival of Sir Frederick 1.ugard. The Governor was accompanied by Lady Lugard and Mr. and Miss Brackenbury. They were met by Mr. C. H. Ross, but instead of taking up position in the Governor's stand, preferred to mingle with the people who filled the stand bordering the course. It is needless to remark that business was brisk at the Pari Mutuel and in the Cash Sweeps. On this occasion, however the former paid "no startling dividende, 821.70 being the highest for the day, and this was paid on the last race in which Mr. B. F. C. Master rode Astral to victory. In the Cash Sweeps those who had the luck to draw first or second ponies were well repaid for their 85 investment. The highest amount paid was in the Jumping Com- petition when the drawer of Box received a dividend of $491.40. A new event, the costume race, was introduced for the sake of variety a prize being offered for the best costume. After examining the varied and beautiful costumes, the Judges awarded the first prize to the White Knight whose glittering armour was the out- come of Mrs. May's labours.

/ 8 naual keen interest centred in the challenge cup, and although the fields small, the betting was extensive. Blue Nile toor up the position by the rail, then Coxcomb, with Manchurian Chief on the outer course. Coxcomb and Manchurian Chief took the lead when the flag dropped, and Blue Nile kept hard in the res". The field remained in a bunch until the football stand was passed, then Coxomb drew a length ahead of the other ponies. Going up the incline, however, Blue Nile lessened the distance separating him from the leader, while Manchurian Chief fell to the rear. l'assing the village Coxcomb still lead by ha f a length, but fell back to second place on entering the straight, Mr. Dupree urged him on, but his pace was unequal to that of the winner of the last Chal enge Cup, and the Nile passed the post four lengths ahead of Coxoomb, who had some six length to spare on Man- cburian Chief. The ponies did not show up well in taking the rail, the highest jump being about four feet. Minnoch, although not much of a jumper, proved an expert hill climber, and Mr. Master' displayed some excellent horsemanship in bringing his mount to the level when the pony tried to get on to the flat. The Pari Mutuel paid $9.40 on the winner. The Cash Sweep paid $191.4 on the first; $140.40 on the second, and $70.20 on the third,

In this event there were eight starters, the largest field of the day. The shades of evening were closing in when the ponies wers sent away, and it was impossible to follow them round the course. As they passed the Judge's box for the first time Velocity was foremost, the rest of the field being bunched and following closely in his wake. As the ponies entere i the straight on the home run Astral shot ahead, and although Coxcomb challenged him, he was firs: past the winning post. Blue Nile was well up in third place.
