THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

HONGKONG, 28th June, 1907.-The market

has tuled very unsteady during the week under review, chiefly owing to a temporary fail in Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Shares in Lon- don on account of a glut of new issne shares thrown on the market. Towards the end of the week, however, with the news of a rapid recovery of the stock in London, everything assumed a brighter aspect, and rates which were inclined to droop quickly recovered. A fair amount of business has been transacted at about the same rates as those ruling last wek, and the market closes steady at quotations.

Our

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais. market closed last week with sellers at $875 Per picul (cum all), with London at £98. ln the early Tls. 34.00 | part of this week, however, wi h a quick decline in the London rate to £91.10 cum «l', and to £35 prem for the new issue, the local rate very gradually and reluctantly was forced to follow the drop, but ouly to a very limited extent, and we may safely say that our local rates were at no time as low as the London ones, and there was no apparent eagerness to sell; in fact, con- trary to all expectations, China holders showed all the firmuess and London holders the weak. DesB. The weakness in London, however, was as temperary as it was sudden, the market very 1020 quickly recovering itself, and at time of closing 8.50 authentie private advices quote £99. rum all, 11.00 £76. ex new issue, and £42 prem new issue. A 10.50 few fractional certificates (į shar, s new issue) 14.25 have changed hands during the week at $187 to 17.50 $190 pr. m, and a few local 8-les at $860 cum all have also been effected. We have nothing to report in Nationals.

FREIGHT.

Messrs. Wheelock & Co.'s Report, dated June 20th, 1907, has the following:-There is not much change to report in our homeward freight market since last writing except that th` skins and wool se son is now rapidly coming to close, and the green tea season is taking its lace, the liners getting the preference of the glass chops both via Pacific t the United States and via Suez canal to Europe. There is very little doing

coast and rates have slackened all round siace at writing. Although tonnage is limited there no particular demand in any direction.
