The alleged bribe of Tls. 100,000 made by the now dismissed Governor designate of Heilung. kiang province, H.E. Tuan Chih-kusi, to Prince Ching is stated by the Sinwenpao to have been borrowed by Tua Chih-kuen from Sun Ch'ang- ying, a compradore of the foreign firm of Yeh Hsiu in Tientsin. As birthday presents of such large amount and even greater are by no means infrequent in Peking, it was quite natural for Prince Ching to have received the gift from Taan Chih-kuei, who is a protégé of his, without thinking anything out of the way of the matter, or that it was ever intended as a bribe for the

former's patron. The Censors themselves are notorious as being only too eager for gift, and failing such presents denunciatory memorials - are forthcoming-and. it is suspected that it was the neglect of the uolgokv Governor-designate of Heilungkiang in omitting to reply satis- factorily to the Censor, Chao Chilin that present downfall-and, perhaps, will that of bis patron also.;

police communicated with. After they had visited the place, and made careful quiries, they came to the conclusion that it was not a case of attempted arson, but that Chinese robbers had been endeavouring: by means of an old practice, to gain entrance to the shop on the ground floor, and had probably been disturbed while so employed, and decamped. To avoid making a noise the Chinese robber, instead of forcing open a door, burns a hole in the wall large enough for him to put his hand through and so be enabled to withdraw the bolt. This, in the opinion of the police, is what happened in the present instance.

"AN UNTRUE ROBBERY IN PO WAH STREET."

The handsome address from the community, We think our readers will enjoy the follow- which is being forwarded

to Sir Matthewing contribution more in its unedited form Nathan, was on view at the Legislative Council Here it appears, just as it reached us:] Chamber on Thursday afternoon. It is bound in blackwood covers artistically carved in pure Chinese designs. On the front of the book is affixed the crest of the Colony in gold, while shove and below it are the two Chinese char- acters representing "good luck." At the bottom of the cover is a plate bearing the inscription" Presented to H.E. Sir Matthew Nathan, K.C.M.G. on his departure from Hongkong, 20th April, 1907."

The opposite

which is also beautifully carved, displays a golden bat with outstretched wings at each of the four corners. This is expressive of good wishes being wafted to Sir Matthew on favourable winds from those who admired him in Hongkong.

The robbery perpetrated in the So family residence in Po Wah Street has now been followed up to the fact that it was a false alarm raised by the inmates. It would seem that the shock caused by the gunpowder magazine explosion on the 2nd instant was so keenly felt in this house that all doors and windows were thrown open in a terrific force. One of the servants thinking that a gang of burglars was breaking into the house shouted in the loudest voice possible for their arrest, The police on ascending the roof had acciden tally fired a shot into the street which killed. one joss-stick hawker, and injured another passbyer. These policemen are now suspended to answer a charge of manslaughter.
