Viceroy Blum bas got his way about not going to Saechwan. He broke his journay at Peking. and in an interview with his old friend and admirer, easily persuaded ti e l'mpress Dowager to cancel the obnoxious appointment. It is reported that he has obtained a post with better “ chanosy,” nearer the Throne.

HONGKONG ELECTRIC CO., LD.
The sighteouth ordinary yearly meeting of shareholders in this Company was held at the officer of the Company, St. George's Building. on May 8th. Mr. A. G. Wood presided. other sh`rsholdera present being Sir Panl Chater, Hoa Mr. W. J. Grasson, Mr. G. H‚· Mathurst (directors), Mr. W. H. Wiokham (manager), Hon. Mr E Osborne, Mag<ra. J. W. Bonnar. A. Baptista, G. Barton Sayer, E. W. Terry, R. Hancook, G. Balloob, W. A. Dowley, and R. R. Robarts.
The WANAGIR read the notice calling the meeting.
The CHAIRMAN mid:
Gentlemen, the report and statement of necounts having been in your hauds for some days, I propose, with your permission, to take them as read. The directors hava pleasure in submitting these socounts, showing as they do a continasi expansion in the Company's opera tions; our services now squalling upwards of 44,500 lamps of 8 candle power, 25 aro lamps and 20 lifts, a rainst 39,500 lamps, 85 are lamp: and 80 lifts at the date of our last report. Further connections both of lamps and lifts are now in baud. Our plant #ooouat shows K. considerable increase, mainly due to payments on account of the new system of underground distribution laid throughout the centre of the City. This work was commenced during last summer and has replaced the old system of overhead distribution throughout the central area with very satisfactory results, both as regards freedom from interruption by storms
and
typhoons, and alvo efficiency and noonomy in servios, which you will doub'less agree with me is equally desirable from our point of view. The sud and building account also shows an increase on last year's figures, to be accounted for by payments on account of reconstruction of the western portions of our engine room and levelling the remaining part of our station site. as mentiona' in the Managar's report. ''ur stocks of installation material, afores and coal are valued at nearly $27,000′ leas than they were in the accounts last presented; the amount, of stock in each class being some- what smaller, and the ralne of all sterling pair: chased supplies correspondingly less owing to the high rate of exchange that has recently prevailed. Sundry debtors show a very satis factory decrease, and cash in the hands of gár bankers and agents a correspondingly satis factory increase compared with similar head- ings in our last accounts. The balance of foss amoants ta 8110,449.72, profit and

were able to arrange contracts in the previous year. I am pleased to say that the cost of Japanese coal has now receded to figures nearly comparable with those raling in 1903. After deducting 83,000 for•Directors' fees, a sum of $107.44972 remains available for appropriation, and your Directors propose to deal with this sum as follows: -lo pay a dividend of 10 per cent, say 81 per share on 59.991 fully paid up shares, and fifty cents per share on nine part. paid shares; to write off th› sum of $14,1208) from plant account and $379,76 from faraiture account for depreciation. and to carry forward the balance of 82,953,66 to the next socount. I trust this propwal will have your sanction and approval, maintaining as it does the dividend at the rate of $1 per share

dividend issued, and thus representing s disbursement of 810,30 1 in excess of that made at our last general meeting. The appropriation for writing down our plant is a substantial one, and follows out the policy which your Board has consistently adopted for a number of years past It is a necessary provision in view of the frequent obanges and improvements that have been and are being introduced in electrio plant. As I mentioned when addressing you last year, your directors, in view of the increased cost of coal and the disabilities under generation of steam power is carried on at our present Wanchai works, have had under serious consideration the adoption of other and improved methods of generating power. After careful inquiries they decided in July last to order two
