A coolie, who had a grudge against a woman contrived a very pretty plot to get her into trouble. He placed a certain amount of opium in her house sud then gave information against her to the excise authorities. The plot however was discovered and the coolie fonad himself in the hands of the law. Brought before his Worship on a charge of conspiracy, he was remanded at the request of Mr. C. D. Thomson, who appeared for his defence.

The British Cousul at Changsha, Capital of Hunan, has written to Governor Chen stating that from aivices reo-ived from the missions at H-ington it appears that some natives in that dieriet hva printed a pamphlet entitled "Jen Jen Yar Kau or "Everyman's Book," concerning the foreign missionaries there. The author of the pamphlet accuses the missionaries of being responsible for | anti-Christian cutrages in China, and advises people not to listen to their false preaching. In order to prevent disturbances, H. E. Chen has been requested to take immediate sotion to suppress the pimplilet. Governor Chep has issued circular instructions to all the migistentes in Hunan to arrest bad characters and proteo foreign missionaries.
