THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

can

The local dealers are pleased with the better ! news from Newchwang, for which Port orders have already been executed for the opening of the season. Tientsin wants to buy and apparently pay much higher prices in New York than she could get the goods here at. The great and redeeming feature of all, how- ever, is the strength of the home markets, which must curtail supplies and allow the buge stocks here to be reduced very materially. Manchester surprises everyone, as it is difficult to understand from what quarters of the globe the demand is emanating to keep her so full of orders, the falling off in the demand for this market being so pronounced. More orders have, however, been sent to that market evidently than was generally supposed, for the export of Plain Cottons for Jaunary was 42,000,000 yards, fully a third more than the fortnightly figures signifed. Cotton is again trending upwards, to-day's quotation for Mid-American bring 6.01d. while 5.6td. is quoted for the whole month option. Egyptian is also firmer at 10ġd

The

New York market is strong, especially for the lighter weights, in fact it was reported to hare advanced to an extent we refrain. from mention- ing until it is more definitely confirmed. The Yarn market closes steady to firm, with a good prospect of a brisk demand for the North so Koon as it re-opens. Native Cotton is strong and advancing. Scarcely any. thing has been done this week, beyond the Auctions, from first hands, and there, with

Messrs. Ilbert & Cal's Piece Goods Report contains the following:-"The past year has been a remarkable one in many ways. As far as this market is concerned it. commenced with very heavy stocks and heavy forward commitments in almost all classes of plain staples, but with an ab sence of demand from any of the dependencies to alleviate the situation. The former have con- tinued to accumulate, as recent stock returns for the end of the year show, while until quite lately the internal markets of the country have shown only the most apathetic demand for supplies Although it is reported that the forthcoming settlement will involve failures amongst a few minor native hongs, any severe crises throughout the year owing to the overstocked condition of the market have been guarded against by the measure of sustenance given to values through the phenominal and continuous advance in prices in producing countries, which, even with the steady advance in exchange that has taken place, has also prevented further supplies except in much restricted quantity from coming forward."
