AT THE NAVALYAED.

There was no end of pleasure for Navalyard employees on Tuesday. Then races and tugs-of-war were indulged in until it was time to return for Christmas dinner. At this, Inspector Lawrence presided over a large muster and a jolly hour was spent. In the the evening a dance was held in the mess room which was prettily

decorated for the Occasion. An attractive festure in the decorations was the large shield of medals on either side of which was a circles of daggers. The medals included the South African, the Fomali, the Indian frontier and the China and belanged to members of the Dock- yard police who had seen service in the places mentioned, A large number attended the dance, and all were well cared for by Inspector Lawrence and a number of the police, whose efforts were responsible for the success of the evening.

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT],

December 27th. New years do not bring many changes to this ancient city, but wa hagin 1907 with the new Senado; and H.E. Pedro Coutinho, the new Governor is expected to leave Lisbon about the end of February.

No reply has been made yet to the merchants' petition against the compulsory sealing of their jourusle, ledgers, pash and stock books,

Mr. Bresan, the Commissioner of Customs at Lapps, has had his hands and face severely burned by the explosion of an acetylene lamp.

The postmaster here does not believe in Sunday work. Mails arriving on Sundayı ard deposited in a Chinese sho, and left till the Chinaman takes them to the post office next morning! This is admittedly unsafe, but instead of opening the post office on Sundays to receive the mails, I hear that our postmaster has asked the Hongkong post office not to forward any mail on Sundays!
