HONGKONG FIFTY CENT PIECES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY PRESS.

Bongkong, December 4th, 1906. SIE-The latest issue of the Singapore Government Gazette contained a proclamation making the fifty cent pieces (which have hitherto been legal only up to two dollars) legal tender to any amount.
As we have no British dollars in circulation in the Colony now, perhaps the Government will see its way to follow the example of Singapore in this respect.—Yours, &c.,

CALCULATING GODOWN SPACE.

TO THE EDIT R OF THE DAILY PRESS."
s'ruct.
Hongkong, December 5th, 1906. SIR, -In the report in yesterday's Daily Press"
of the meeting of the shareholders of the Shangbai Dock and Engineering Co. the speakers seemed to have got somewhat confused in their calculating the cubic capacity of the godowns the Company intend to con- One speaker elicited loud laughter when he stated that 30 per cent would be lost. in passage space and an additional 20 per cent. for stowage. According to his figures the 20 per cent for stowage loss is calculated ou the whole
enbic capacity of the godowns making in all 50 per cent, which one would think accounted for the loud laughter. Later on another speaker, who was listened to more seriously, seemed to have fallen into the same error, but was not laughed at, Had they gone about the calculation in the right way they would, I think, have arrived at a different result. For example, let the cubic capacity equal one foot. Then, 1 less 31 per cent equals 7 of a foot. Now instead of calcu’ating the loss from stowage on one foot it must be calculated on the 7 of a foot. Therefore, 7 less 20 per cent equals 56 of a foot, or 56 per coat of a foot. This is 6 per cent more than stated by the speakers, which makes a great difference in profit earning where about 3,00,000 cubic feet are being considered.
Yours faithfully, DAVID J. LENNOX.

Hongkong, December 7th. SIR,-I understaud from the letter which appears in your issue of to-day under abore heading that the loss on 1 r.ft. after deducting 30 per cent for passages, aud 20 per cent for loss in stowage is 56 per cent of the whole. If this is so, the writer has goue just as much astray as the speaker at the particular meeting to which he refers. They overstate the loss 6 per cent whereas the writer overstates 12 per cent. The available space of 1 c.ft., after making the deduction based on the writer's figures, is as follows:-

MOTOR BOAT SECTION FORMED.
The Corinthian Yacht Club, which has been making remarkable progress this season, is to be commended for its enterprise in forming a section for motor-boats. This innovation, which is the first attempt at snoh an organisation in the Far East, was decided upon at a meeting of the committee on Deo. 5th, when it was agro d to hold a series of races for these oraft, during the season. A championship cup and one or two other cups are being presented. Wə are informed that the entries to date number eight and that others are expected. The following motor boat sub-committee was elected Messrs. J. Hands, W. A. Crake, G.K. Haxton, W. Davidson, J. Blake, and G. L. Hales.
A club cruise for members and friends has been a ranged for New Year's day. Yachts and motor boats will leave their moorings opposite the club house at 10.3) a.m. and proceed to Junk Bay. A launch for the con- venience of members and friends will start from Blake Pier at the same time. Tiffin will be provided on board. IPOH OFFICIAL ON CHINESE PLEASURES.
In opening the big Chinese theatre at Ipoh, Mr. E. W. Birch made the following very commonsense remarks on the subject of opium and gambling. He had referred at length to Sir Frank Swettenham's remarks on the Chinese, and added:
I quote this because I wish the Chinese to know that those who are responsible for the Government-the Ros dents and the Resident- General-do not forget what they owe to the Chinese, and all we ask of them is that whenever they have any complaints to make they will bring it to the notice of the Government and ask the Government to settle it, and not as the Chinese are stupidly doing in Singapore, fight it out amongst themselves.
There are some people nowadays who tell you that you must not smoke opium and you must not gamble. It is a bad thing to smoke too mach opium, and it is a bad thing to gamble 5.66 for more than you can pay. But think that these people forget that it is necessary for 1,000 every human being to play as well as to work,
501
and I am very glad to see in a busy place like 27.20 Ipoh this splendid Theatre opened, where after your day's work you can come and enjoy yourselves.
