THE LEAL SENADO.

The last Boletim coutained a notio regard. ing the election of new members for this corporation for 1917-08 which is to take place on the 18th instant. Very little importance is attiched to this election as independent voters 18.55

are few, and very apathetic. The result will 10.50 be that the Government will have all their own 100.30

wy in the selection of the members. Whoever they may be, I can only hops that the new members wil be more business-like, and look more carefully into the welfare of Macao. The electric lighting should be inquired into by them and placed on a more satisfactory footing than it is at present. As it is now we would be better off if we had our antiquated kerosene lamps.

TYPHOON RELIEF FUND.

OFFICIAL REPORT OF RELIEF MADE.

Further claims have been considered by the Sub-Committee, and up to the 3rd November relief to the amount of $92.860 has been given for 754 Chinese owned boats, and 3200 for one European boat.

Sixteen cases of Chinese widows and orphans have been dealt with, grants to the amount of $992 having been made, while the sum of 8463 45 has been paid to the widow of a European.

A payment of $15,000 has already been made to the Tung Wa Hospital on account of ex- penses incurred in burying dead bodies and maintaining destitutes.

FIRE IN THE HONGKONG HOTEL.

SERIOUS ALARM.

THE REPAIR OF PRAIA GRANDE,

The damage caused by the late typhoons is now being repaired by the Public Works Department, but in a scandalously cheeseparing style. As the work is being done now, the beautiful Praia Grande will be worse off after another typhoon. The present officials are preparing bitter days for their successors.

THE COLONIAL Secretary and TREASURER.

It is currently reported here that the Colonial Secretary, Dr. Lello and the Treasurer, Sr. Menezes, at present on leave in Lisboa, have been ordered by the Home Government to return at once to their posts in Macac, or they will have to send in their resignations.

DEBASED CURRENCY.

Besides the large number of Chinese ten and twenty cent pieces at present circulating in this city, we are now being invaded with the objectionable Chinese $1 and $10 notes. Land- lords have already given notice that rents must be paid in Hongkong or Macao bank notes, no others will be received; rents paid in Chinese coins will have to bear an increase of 10 per cent. The premium on Hongkong and Macao bank notes is 61 per cent.

EXTRAORDINARY ACCIDENT.

About two o'clock a.m. on November 4th the Fire Brigade was summoned to Pedder Street. fire having been discovered in the first floor of the Hongkong Hotel, immediately above the premises occupied by Fairall and Co. For tunately the flames had not obtained a great hold, and the firemen succeeded in extinguishing them in a short time. Comparatively little damage was done in the hotel, but practically the whole of the millinery stock in the shop beneath was ruined by the water. Consider able alarm prevailed among the residents of the hotel, but this soon subsided when they saw the brigade at work. The origin of the outbreak is traced to the fusing of an electric wire. The alarm was more pronounced than it need have been, owing to the recent testimony at the Hankow enquiry (that the hydrants would be The last mail brought us the news of the inadequate in case of fire in this very building) death of Sr. Arthur Tamagnini Barbosa, the having naturally been the subject of discussion | late" Inspector de Fazends" of Macao, which among the residents.
