MARRIAGES.
On May 11th some Chinese boatmen picked up the dead body of a foreigner in the river at Shanghai. The body was handed over to the River Police and by them taken to the Mortuary, where it was ascertained to be that of Leading Sto er Phillips, of H.M.S. Hart, who was reported drowned the previous week. Mr. W. B. Buyers, one of the founders of the Shangbai Marine Eugineers' Institute (or Black * quad Club) and for many years secretary aud manager, is going Home. The members presented him with an illuminated address and a chequ; He rally worked wonders for this popular and useful institute during thirteen years of office, and the testimonial was quite spontaneous,

A Tientsin dispatch reports that a large body of mouuted bandita suddenly male their appearance recently at a colliery in Heinol'in in the district of Chaoyang, just on side he Great Wall, and coolly began to take poss-ssiou of the place after defeating the guard of Chinese troops stationed at the mine for its protecțion and the protection of the foreign employees there. A Cant dispatch to a native paper Shanghai states that Vic-roy Shum bas sigued the rough draft of an agreement with Mr. J. O. P. Bland, representing a British syndi- cate, for the construction of the above-usmed railway. 'l'he syndicate is to loud to Chins funds for the entire construction of the line, and lows and interest therson to be guéranteed by the likin on salt in Kwang-tung province, and so long as the loan has not been repaid the working and control of the line are to be in the hands of the syndicate. The details of the draft agreement have been sent to Peking.
