THE OFF-DAY.
Although clouds still obscured the sun, and mist encircled the surrounding hills, weather conditions at Happy Valley on Feb. 17th were considerably better than on any of the previous days of the races. The turf was a little harder, which made better times possible. The atten- dance was as large, and the excitement which prevailed as great as on the more important days. Between races, leasing selections of music were played by the band of the Royal West Kents. Undoubtedly the surprise of the day was the winning by Shimeosite of the Knight's Cup race. The previous per- formances of this pony did not justify any confidence being placed in him; consequently, when the race started only 38 backers were on the outsider, who ran home an easy winner. His patrons drew the highest dividend paid for the day, $105.10. H. E. the Governor arrived at the Valley shortly before the first race, and remained to the last, THE "

A very good race. Halcyon Days led the bunch at the first, but soon Shimeosite, who headed the field till at the village, when he dropped into third plac, Rover now claimed the premier position, while Rel Herring, who had lain fourth or fifth all the way up to this point, cams through the ruck, and an exciting run down the straight with Rover ended in the favourite winning by a neck. Time-3. The Pari-Mutuel paid $6.80, $13.90, $15.30 on the respective winners and a dividend of 89 80.
