brought about confusion to all branches of trade. Now this is to be superseded by the coinage of an entirely new coin, the Kuping Tael, which, with its subdivisions, cannot fail to be of interest to those engaged in this trade, and prepare them for further dislocations of it. The market general- | ly has been much perturbed by the gamboling antica that have marked the course of exchange during the interval we have under review. used to be possible to judge to some extent by the course of the London Silver market, coupled with what was actually doing in both the import and export trades, what rates might be expected; but now-a-days it is quite impossible to follow the intricate ramifications that go towards the manipulation of Foreign exchanges. safely be concluded that the native operators in this branch of the trade have added further dur- ing the interval to the complicated tangle they were already in. The prescience, judgment, or whatever you choose to call it, that has been shown by the majority of them during the last twelve months seems to have been merely play. ing into the hands of the exchange banks. The fluctuations may have had the effect of delaying the expected revival that was to take place, but that is doubtful, and it looks pretty certain 'now All our that trade for the season is finished. enquiries have failed to elicit any fresh tran- sactions either from stocks or to arrive, the market coutinuing in a state of utter stagnation. Direct shipments to the Northern Ports are at an end. Small supplies may go up during the winter by way of Ching-wan-tao, but the little interest shown lately does not promise much. A disagreeable element is apparently being intro- duced into the Newchwang trade by a certain firm that has recently opened a house there, namely the direct importation of American domestics on the same pernicious credit system as prevails in Tientsin. The natives here who are interested in that trade are not at all pleased, and are endeavouring to take some concerted action in the matter. It is so obviously detrimental to

the whole trade that it is hoped the Foreign banks will not assist in financing the transactions, and thus avoid injury to the business of their con- stituents here. The River markets are in as bad a state as ever, but the report of a big financial crash in Hankow last week, that was expected to create havock to this trade there, was greatly exaggerated. The native hong in question was not interested in piece goods; the amount of the liabilities was only Tls. 350,000, sixty-five per cent. of which was secured and the balance has been arranged. All the same there is no noticeable improvement in the demand for goods either there or at the other ports. There is some enquiry for Szechuen, but orders coming down were based on a 2/11 exchange. The trade with Corea has come to an absolute standsill, and it remains to be seen how it will develope in future under the new regime; but it looks exceed. ingly doubtful if it will redound to the benefit of Manchester. Meanwhile the financial position, consequent on the change of currency, and the impending enhancement of the Customs Tariff are some of the obstables that have to be faced. The Manchester market is exceedingly strong and quite precludes all forward transactions. Under the existing circumstances nothing could be better for this market, and all operators here would be content to see a continuance of the rise and a complete cessation of buying for some months to come. Cotton promises to assist towards that end. The last Liverpool quotations were 6.35d. for Mid-American and 8d. for Egyptian, while New York wires 12.57 cents for July option. This has been brought about by the publication of the official estimate of the crop as 10,167,818 bales.
Tin-Plates Piece Goods. The latter half of this year has been terribly disappointing; first the boycott, next the flood, and the very unwelcome rise in exchange. The market at present is dull, clearances are poor, there is no enquiry for stock, and forward business is more impossible than ever. Stocks continue to accumulate and every one is puzzled to know where the fresh arrivals are to be stored. The export from Man- chester last month was 41,000,000 yards of plain Cottons alone, while fancy goods now make a big item. The only direct transactions brought to our notice are the Public Auctions. As usual prices have been as steady, perhaps, as could be expect ed with the uncertain and wobbly exchange, and do not call for any special comment. Szechuen is said to have taken nearly 1,000 bales of Man- chester goods from second hands during the interval, 12 lbs. 36 inch grey shirtings forming a Cotton Yarti. ——— goodly proportion of the total. Indian-Although the business reported during the interval only amounts to 3,570 bales of 811 counts from first hands the total transactions must have been quite as much again, as native
