An outbreak of fire, supposed to have been caused through spoutaneous combustion, occurred in a coal matshed near the Tsimchatsui Police Station on the 10th May. The fire originated on the top of a heap of coal, and caught on to the roof of the matshed, but was extinguished before much damage resulted. and before the brigade, under Deputy Superintendent Lyons, arrived from Hongkong. The matshed is believed to be the property of Messrs. Siemssen and Company,
The case in which Pilot Lawlor is charged with infringing a harbour regulation was con- tinued before Mr. F. A. Hazeland at the Police Court on 11th May. In the course of his evidence, Mr. Osborne, of the Gordown Company, stated that during sixteen years prior to the passing of the new Ordinance there had only been one slight accident in berthing ships alongside the wharves; but since European pilots had taken the work in hand, a number of serious accidents had been very narrowly averted.
