The Brigades of Major Generals

Ford and Schoede

were to be on day-light

but considerable delay took place in effecting the disembarkation from

the

rapidity

of the current, the scattered state of the ships, some of which had made a mistake

were landed, and Major General Brtley's Brigade followed. I accompanied General Lord Saltoun's Brigade

Major General Schoede's Brigade, as already mentioned, had a full view of the city and encampments. On the walls of the former but few men appeared,

but the

encampments were still occupied, though

not many men showed themselves; I therefore directed Lord Saltown to move

forward at once with

the leading Regiment of his Brigade, the 78th Regiment with some companies

of the

Bengal Volunteers and the flank companies of the 41 M. N. I. to attack and destroy the

encampments,

and if possible

cut off their communication with the city. I sent a detachment under Major Anctiother with this Brigade, and

a detachment of Sappers, in case

any obstacles should present themselves.

The Bengal Volunteer... landed some time afterwards,

having experienced some difficulties

companies of

under Major Kent, having spent some time, Major Gough

Deputy Quarter Master General, to accompany them with directions to fall on the enemy's right

and

possibly lead

them to the

ground, which

was thought might be in their favour.

came in contact

enemy seen, until they
